There are many factors to consider when choosing what to wear while on safari in Uganda. These could include the weather, the type of activity you intend to engage in, the region you plan to visit and a lot more.
Clothing Tips:
- Casual and comfortable clothes always work. You dress down in most cases. Uganda is quite conservative, so tight and revealing clothes should be avoided. Jeans and t-shirts recommended.
- Color choices: And when it comes to color, traditional safari greens and tans are entirely the way to go. Bright colors, white included might scare away the wildlife before you get a chance to see them! On the other hand, very dark colors tend to attract dangerous insects like tsetse flies. So stick to neutral colors and remember to always carry your insect repellent. And please note camouflage is banned in Uganda.
- Uganda is a sunny country most of the year round, so choose lightweight layers of natural fabrics like linen, cotton and bamboo. Although, on some areas evenings are little bit chilly so a warm sweater or jumper may come in handy. In other wards consider layering – visitors who have multiple layers have a chance to dress warmer or colder as the weather demands it.
- Pack waterproof clothing especially if you have a trek to do on your safari. During the wet seasons, rains do come any time.
- Long, loose fitting trousers and long sleeved light shirts or blouses are a good idea. They save you from insect bites while in the wild and will still keep you cool in the hot sun.
- A lightweight versatile jacket with plenty of storage pockets is also a good idea.
- For the women, a good skirt or loose fitting trousers are good and will protect you from the sun. A pashmina or sarong is also a good addition. You won’t’ need your valuable jewelry either, it safer left at home
Shoe / Footwear Ideas:
Safaris in Uganda usually involve many hours of travel, sometimes on dusty and uneven roads. So consider packing comfortable walking shoes and sandals. If your safari involves a few walks in the bush, then lightweight walking shoes / trainers are fine. But activities like gorilla and chimpanzee tracking involve hiking through the thick and sometimes slippery jungle, so sturdy boots are a must have.
Other things to consider:
- Face mask
- Wide-brimmed hats: These lower the risk of sunburn as shades won’t be enough to ward it off.
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Sunglasses
- Rechargeable flashlight
- A day bag to carry your daily essentials and travel documents
