Two baby rhinos have been born at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. The two male rhinos born in two consecutive days at the sanctuary. This brings the total number of rhinos at the sanctuary to 38.
According to the Uganda Wildlife Press statement, Malaika gave birth to her fourth calf on April 12, 2023. While her sister Uhuru, gave birth to her third calf on April 13th 2023.
Both Malaika and Uhuru were produced by Nandi, a female rhino that was donated by Disney Animal Kingdom in Florida, USA; at the age of 7 years together with Hassan, a male rhino that was aged 5 years then. The pair was among the first six Southern white rhinos that were re-introduced in Uganda. The Northern White Rhinos became extinct in Uganda in 1980.
Malaika’s other offspring are Noelle, Elias and Pipo while those of Uhuru are Nakitoma and Rae Ruparelia.
Uganda Wildlife Authority and Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch are jointly managing the Ziwa sanctuary. The news of two baby Rhinos born at Ziwa has brought a lot excitement. As it signals to the success of the rhino conservation efforts in Uganda.
The UWA Executive Director, Mr. Sam Mwandah had this to say:
“This is what anyone in conservation wants to see, the fruits of our efforts! We have come a long way since rhinos became extinct in Uganda. Our rhino reintroduction and breeding efforts are there for everyone to see.”
Uganda Wildlife Authority is currently undertaking preliminary activities that will lead to the re-introduction of while rhinos into the wild. The initial relocation will be to Ajai Wildlife Reserve.
However, the two baby rhinos born at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary are yet to get names.
