The news of a new born in this group comes with great excitement and lots of hope for Mubare gorilla group. This is because the group had earlier on lost some of its members due to unavoidable circumstances. With this new addition, it means there is hope of the family expanding again.
The Mubare family group (also known as Mubale or M Group) is one of Uganda’s oldest gorilla groups to be habituated in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The habituation process began in 1991 and it took 2 years. By 1993, the group was ready to receive visitors
The group is named after the beautiful Mubare hills; where the group was first sighted. Initially, this gorilla family group had 18 members and was led by the mighty silverback Ruhondeza. But with time, group became smaller as some members moved on to other groups; some lost their lives due to fights.
As of 2018, the group had only 11 members under the leadership of silverback Kanyonyi. There were 6 females, 1 semi adult and 3 infants. So the news of Mubare group welcoming a new born baby is very exciting, as it means there is hope of numbers growing, thanks to this latest addition.
To meet the fascinating Mubare Gorilla family group, one must have a gorilla permit reserved for the Buhoma location / gate. You will learn about the rich history of this group during the gorilla trek.
